Jan De Nul Group signed the contract for deepening the Umm Qasr Port, situated in the most southern tip of Iraq, near the border with Kuwait. This commercial port is Iraq’s gate to the Arabic Gulf and Iraq’s lifeline for import of mixed cargo and bulk goods. Through the years, the port slowly silted up and Jan De Nul Group now has to deepen it to -12.5 m. The contract is worth 52 million Euros and for 8 months, it will put 1 small and 1 medium sized trailer hopper dredger to work. Client is GCPI (General Company for Ports of Iraq). The signing of the contract is the result of months-long negotiations. Extreme attention has been given to the safety of crew, staff and vessels.
