Major HSE* Award for Jan De Nul Group
On 17 September Mr. Vandewalle, received the IADC Safety Award for 2008 from IADC’s President, Mr. Koos Van Oord during the organization’s Annual Convention in Athens, Greece.
This significant award was received for the work Vlaamse Baggermaatschappij undertook in 2007 in Jervoise Bay, south of Perth, Western Australia. Although during this fairly small project only some 100,000 m³ was dredged and reclaimed, nevertheless Jan De Nul succeeded in winning high praise from its client, the Australian Marine Complex. And as most of you are aware, our Australian clients are known to be extremely unforgiving when it comes to Health, Safety & Environment.
To ensure strict compliance with HSE laws & regulations during project execution, the client appointed an external entity to conduct three audits. During these three audits, zero non-compliances were reported, no non-conformities were registered and the project was executed without a single ‘losttime injury’.
We were not only highly commended by our client for our outstanding achievements for Health & Safety but we received equal high praise for our Environmental Monitoring & Management. This part of our HSE Management was also very carefully considered because the dredging works were executed in the vicinity of the sensitive sea grass meadows in Cockburn Sound.
This day-to-day attention to detail in quality, health & safety, and environment resulted in on-time delivery of a superior project – creating, as our client described it, ‘a culture of safety’.
The IADC Board qualified Jan De Nul’s HSE performance on this project as outstanding, certainly considering the limited execution time (2 months) which allowed little room for adaptations during the project.
