Jan De Nul Group, project Aalst Kaai District

Have a taste of the new low-traffic city quarter alongside the quays

Have a taste of the new low-traffic city quarter alongside the quays. Turn the engine off and breathe in fresh air. Car-free Sunday on 22 September 2019 shows how our city would look in an ideal scenario. Although “would”... the image of the street on that one day comes closer to reality than you might think because Kaai District, a new low-traffic city quarter with smart mobility solutions, is under construction here.

The current commuter car park and the wider railway station environment are currently being strategically converted by PSR/Jan De Nul Group and BesixRED into a sustainable area where it is good to move, live, work, shop and relax by the water: Kaai District. This Car-free Sunday will offer a taste of this future part of Aalst.

What will be going on? Daredevils (being at least 125 cm tall) can cycle 12 metres up on a vertical mountain bike at the Statieplein. The faster you pedal, the sooner you will have a whole new view of the new commuter car park. Meanwhile, supporters can enjoy an ice cream offered by Kaai District from a pop-up terrace made from bales of straw. For the little ones, we will have chalks ready to give the Statieplein a new colourful look.

Come and have a taste of tomorrow’s Aalst or just enjoy the fun of Car-free Sunday!

Everyone is welcome. | Statieplein in Aalst | from 1 pm to 6 pm.
