Hainan II Interconnector, China

Hainan II Interconnector, China

Between the mainland of China and the island of Hainan, four 500 kV cables were installed by Prysmian which were protected with filter and armour rock by the ‘Joseph Plateau’ in two different campaigns in 2019 and 2020.

The cables needed to be covered with rock berms on the sections where trenching was not possible due to a too hard seabed soil or where the cables were not buried deep enough by the trenching equipment. Rock was procured locally on the Island of Hainan and loaded on board of our vessel ‘Joseph Plateau’ by the use of our specifically designed conveyor belts. Despite of the high current on site, the variating seabed depth and the load restrictions in the shallow harbour the vessel was able to install the required total tonnage of approximately 470,000 tonnes (combined tonnage split over two campaigns).
