Salvage of Norwegian frigate

Scaldis Salvage & Marine Contractors NV, a Belgian Jan De Nul Group subsidiary, Herbosch-Kiere and DEME, together with BOA Offshore, bundled their skills to salvage the Norse frigate KNM Helge Ingstad. That was done in 2019, using a unique ‘Double Duo Lift’ method.

The Norwegian frigate collided with tanker Sola TS on 8th November 2018 near Bergen and sank on the slope of a fjord. The Norwegian navy called on the expertise of Scaldis and BOA Offshore to salvage the shipwreck. Scaldis developed a revolutionary lifting method specifically for this project, by combining its two heavy lifting vessels Rambiz and Gulliver. Both vessels are fitted with two cranes, with which Scaldis can implement a ‘Double Duo Lift’ method, representing a total lifting capacity of 7,300 tonnes. As a result, the 5,500-tonne, 133-metre long frigate was lifted in one piece. Because the four cranes operated synchronously, it was possible to lift the shipwreck in one uninterrupted movement to a horizontal position.
