Colleagues donate project budget for new school after earthquake in Morocco

More than six months ago, an earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale struck southern Morocco. According to the World Health Organisation, more than 300,000 people were affected by the disaster, mainly in the Marrakech-Safi region. Just at that time, we were deepening the port of Safi with CSD Fernão de Magalhães. The colleagues at the project did not hesitate for a second and decided to help the earthquake victims within the Code Zero Challenge.

Reconstruction in Morocco started immediately after the disaster, but due to the immense damage it will take a long time. The victims desperately needed help and solidarity. The project team in Safi saw that too. Together with our Sustainability Team, they released a budget of 10,000 euros within the project to donate to charity. The project chose the non-profit organisation "El Baraka Angels".

"I have Moroccan roots myself and through my connections, I started looking for a reliable organisation that could provide assistance to the earthquake victims. That's how I ended up with El Baraka Angels. El Baraka Angels is a non-profit organisation that has been working in Morocco's remote mountainous regions since 2013. Their mission is to contribute to the socio-economic development of these regions. In short, an organisation that knows what it is doing and in which we have full confidence."

A new boarding school for Anegual

The earthquake destroyed the school in Anegual, a village at an altitude of 1,500 m. El Baraka Angels built seven new and modular classrooms there and also provided two sanitary blocks. This allowed the village's children to quickly resume classes.

They also built a boarding school so that children from surrounding villages can enjoy safe and carefree education. This way, the children do not have to travel far and can also sleep in a safe location. They were able to realise that boarding school thanks to the 10,000 euros donated by the Safi project. In this way, the project team helps to ensure that more than 220 children have a roof over their heads and can go to school with peace of mind.

For the construction of the boarding school, El Baraka Angels collected a total of 957,920 Moroccan dirhams, which is 88,080 euros. They realised the project in just 45 days. A heartwarming collaboration to be proud of!
