Prince Hendrik Sand Dike wins NGB-nature prize 2019

Nature Based Solutions to strengthen biodiversity

The dyke, which is 3 km long, has been reinforced in a unique way: sand in combination with nature development.

On the Quality Day of the “Netwerk Groene Bureaus” (branch organisation for ecological advice and research)  - 29 November 2019 – the Prince Hendrik Sand Dike project won the NGB-nature prize 2019!

The Netwerk Groene Bureaus has made available the NGB nature prize in 2019. It is intended for initiatives in which efforts are made to strengthen biodiversity and where cooperation and innovation are important elements. The Prince Hendrik Sand Dike project was chosen as the most educational project by the fellow agencies.

The Prince Hendrik Sand Dike in Texel did no longer meet the legal safety requirements. That is why we reinforced this dike, as commissioned by the Hollands Noorderkwartier district water control board. The dyke, which is 3 km long, has been reinforced in a unique way: sand in combination with nature development. Execution was started in the summer of 2018 and on the 4th of September 2019 the Prince Hendrik Sand Dike was delivered. Now there is a new sand dune on the sea side of the former hard dike. Because of this dune the Prince Hendrik polder will also have a safe flood defense system in the future. The success of ecological input is due to the ecologists’ involvement in the process at an early stage and the good cooperation with all project partners.
