Vietnam – Ha Tinh

Ha Tinh, Vietnam

The Taiwanese Formosa Plastics Group decided to build a new steel works in the poorest province of Vietnam, Ha Tinh. A region known as the ‘forgotten province’. The new steel complex is located on the northern coastline and will become one of the world’s largest sheet steel producers.

Before the construction of the plant could start, 2,000 ha land had to be reclaimed. The necessary materials, about 80 million m³ in total, had to be dredged from the neighbouring Son Duong harbour. Jan De Nul Group started in 2011 with dredging the 8 km long canal to a 27 m depth. The harbour basin too was deepened to 24 m. At the height of the works, we rain bowed up to 1.5 million m³ of sand per week.
