Remediation and redevelopment of a phosphogypsum landfill to coastal area in Sfax, Tunisia

The Taparura project, part of a programme designed by the Tunisian government and supported by the European Investment Bank, aims to clean up the port area, which was heavily polluted by nearby industry, including phosphate acid production, and to prepare it for a future redevelopment, including the necessary stabilisation works.

The Joint Venture Jan De Nul-Envisan-Somatra/GET signed a contract for the remediation and rehabilitation of the site in Sfax.

The know-how and the cross-fertilisation of different activities within Jan De Nul Group was crucial for the engineering and successful execution of this complex remediation and rehabilitation project.

The Taparura project included environmental dredging, selective excavation, sediment treatment, stabilisation and landfill design. The project was part of a broader package of measures taken by the government for a general improvement of the environment near the city.

Thanks to the remediation of the polluted coastline of the Tunisian city of Sfax and thanks to the creation of a new dike and beach, the coastal zone is ready for a new redevelopment into a possibly brand-new urban district.
