The Ula field is located in the centre of the North Sea approximately in the middle between Norway, the United Kingdom, Denmark and the Netherlands. Maersk Drilling had scheduled a drill rig operation to be positioned next to the one of the Ula platforms which required the installation of three large rock pads.
The rock pads were located right next to and below the platform on a water depth of 70 m and as such very difficult to reach with a standard vertical fallpipe. The rock pad located furthest away was installed with the vertical fallpipe but the closer rock pads were installed with the inclined fallpipe of the ‘Simon Stevin’. With the longest version of that inclined fallpipe the vessel was able to install the total amount of 80,000 tonnes of rock next to and underneath the platform and the scheduled modifications works to reshape the rock pads were reduced to a minimum.
